Pre & Post Season
Wrestling seasons are won in the months nobody is watching. Here is what the Mustang year looks like outside of November through February.
6:00 AM Preseason Class
In the gym, before school. Open to anyone who wants to try wrestling.
You do not need experience, a team spot or any gear to show up — this is where a lot of our wrestlers started. Come find out what the sport is actually like, with coaches teaching from the ground up.
Bring athletic clothes, a water bottle and a hair tie.
White Rhino Wrestling
Our official pre and post season training.
The offseason work — club practice, freestyle, and the technique time that actually changes how you wrestle — runs through White Rhino. Schedules, age groups and registration are all on their site.
Preseason
Late summer through the first official practice.
Preseason is about arriving in shape and cleared to compete, so the first week of practice is spent wrestling instead of catching up. Everything here is open to new wrestlers — you do not need experience to start showing up.
The season is built to peak in February. November and December are technique months. January and February shift to conditioning and individual coaching, with practices getting shorter and sharper, so the team is at its best at Divisionals (Feb 5–6) and State (Feb 19–20).
-
June – August
Summer lifting & camps
Team lifting in the Mountain Crest weight room, plus camps and club training through White Rhino Wrestling. This is where new wrestlers learn stance, motion and the basic scoring positions before the pace picks up.
-
September – October
6:00 AM class & open mats
The preseason class runs at 6:00 am in the gym and is open to anyone curious about wrestling — no experience needed. Add open mats and conditioning on top of it and November is technique work instead of survival.
-
Thursday, Oct 15
Parent & athlete meeting
6:30 to 8:00 pm. Our values, how the season works, fees, paperwork, weight certification, gear and how families can help. Every wrestler brings a parent or guardian.
-
Monday, Nov 9
First day of practice
Sports physical, school registration and forms have to be cleared before you step on the mat. From here practice is Monday through Saturday at 6:00 am, followed by the first-hour wrestling class.
Preseason checklist
- Current sports physical on file
- Online registration and district forms complete
- Participation fee paid or a fee waiver submitted
- Wrestling shoes, headgear and a mouthguard if you wear a retainer or braces
- Joined the team's sportsYou channel
- Been to the 6:00 am preseason class at least a few times
- Academically eligible under UHSAA and district rules
Post Season
From the state tournament through the spring.
The high school season ends in February. The wrestlers who make the biggest jumps are the ones who keep competing in the spring — that is when technique actually changes.
-
Feb 5–6 and Feb 19–20
Divisionals & state championships
Divisionals qualifies wrestlers for the UHSAA state tournament at Utah Valley University. Everyone travels with the team — qualifiers wrestle, everyone else corners, warms up partners and cheers.
-
After state
Awards banquet & exit meetings
Team awards, senior recognition, and one-on-one meetings with the coaches: what went well, what to work on, and a written plan for your offseason.
-
March – May
Freestyle & folkstyle season
Spring is the best development season there is. Freestyle rewards attacking and scoring in exchanges, and the tournaments are lower pressure. This runs through White Rhino Wrestling — schedules and registration are on their site.
-
March – May
Offseason strength
Two to three lifts a week to build the strength base you cannot build in season. Returning wrestlers, incoming freshmen and other-sport athletes are all welcome.
-
Summer
Camps, national events & recruiting
Team camp, technique camps, and for wrestlers chasing college wrestling, the summer events that put you in front of coaches. Girls wrestling is one of the fastest-growing college sports — if you want to wrestle at the next level, start these conversations junior year.
Play another sport
We want multi-sport athletes. Track, soccer, softball, rugby and lacrosse all build things wrestling needs. Tell your coaches your other-sport schedule and we will build an offseason plan that fits around it.
